India have brought Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi into the T20I squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. Shreyas has been selected for the opening three matches — on January 21, 23 and 25 — as cover for Tilak Varma, while Bishnoi replaces Washington Sundar.
Tilak is expected to be unavailable only for the first three games, but Washington has been ruled out of the entire five-match series after scans revealed a side strain. He has been advised a short rest period before reporting to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation.
The timing of these injuries is far from ideal, with the Men’s T20 World Cup — to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka — just weeks away.
India’s revised T20I squad
Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Shreyas Iyer (first three T20Is), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (Vice-captain), Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ishan Kishan (WK), Ravi Bishnoi.
Shreyas makes a return to the T20I fold for the first time since December 2023, when he last featured against Australia in Bengaluru. His recall follows an excellent IPL 2025 season, where he amassed 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 and captained Punjab Kings to the final.
Bishnoi last played a T20I in January 2025 against England. The leg-spinner has so far featured in 42 T20Is, claiming 61 wickets in the format.
