Virat Kohli has overtaken Rohit Sharma to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ICC men’s ODI batting rankings after scoring a decisive 93 off 91 balls in India’s successful chase of New Zealand’s 300 in the first ODI in Vadodara.
This latest update marks the 11th time Kohli has reached the top of the ODI rankings. He first achieved the No. 1 position back in October 2013 and has now accumulated 825 days at the summit — the longest for any Indian batter. Overall, he ranks tenth in the all-time list, which is led by Vivian Richards, who spent an incredible 2306 days as the top-ranked ODI batter.
Kohli’s form has been exceptional recently. Leading into the Vadodara match, he posted scores of 74, 135, 102, and 65** in his last four ODIs — the only international format he continues to play.
Rohit slips to No. 3; Mitchell moves up
Rohit Sharma has not only surrendered the No. 1 ranking but has dropped two spots to No. 3 after scoring just 26 in the series opener. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who struck 84 from 71 balls in the same match, has climbed from No. 3 to No. 2.
The margins remain extremely narrow:
-
Kohli — 785 points
-
Mitchell — 784 points
-
Rohit — 775 points
KL Rahul also made a small gain, moving from No. 12 to No. 11 after an unbeaten 29 off 21 balls.
